1.

Picture a moment when someone you love is upset with you or disagrees with you. What do you do?

My chest tightens and I want to get out of the room. I go quiet, grab my keys, or stop replying for a day or two until I feel safe again. Distance feels like relief. I panic that they'll leave me. I keep texting and calling, apologizing, and explaining until I hear "we're okay." I can't relax until the connection is restored. I swallow my words and tell myself, "It's not worth the fight." I smile, let it go, and carry the hurt silently for days or weeks. My voice gets sharper or louder. I defend myself, list what they did wrong, or bring up old mistakes. I need them to understand I'm not the problem. I quickly turn the focus to how they feel. I soothe, explain, and fix things so everyone is calm again, even if my own feelings are left unspoken.

2.

Think back to your childhood home. What role did you play?

The independent one. I spent lots of time alone in my room or outside. I learned early not to need anyone because closeness never felt reliable. The one who craved attention. I clung to a parent, feared being left, and did anything to be noticed, loved, or chosen. The quiet, "easy" child. I learned that complaining changed nothing, so I stayed silent, adapted, and put up with things. The fighter. I learned that being loud, stubborn, or tough was the only way to be heard or to stay safe. The little parent. I calmed my parents' moods, looked after siblings, and felt it was my job to keep the family okay.

3.

When a new romantic relationship starts to get serious, what do you notice in yourself?

I feel trapped. I start noticing their flaws, feel the urge to slow down or pull back, and sometimes end things just when it gets close. I fall fast and hard. I want to be together constantly, feel alive when it's intense, and I've dropped my hobbies and friends to be with them. I stay even when I'm unhappy. I keep hoping things will improve and tell myself, "Every relationship has problems," while my needs go unmet. I feel a need to control things. When I feel insecure, I test them, criticize, or push them to prove how much they care. I'm drawn to someone who's struggling. I feel most connected when I'm the one helping, healing, or "fixing" them.

4.

You're overwhelmed and truly need support. What happens next?

I handle it alone. Asking for help feels risky, so I withdraw and get through it by myself, even if it takes longer. I reach out over and over. I need constant reassurance, and if I don't get it, I feel anxious and afraid they're pulling away. I say "I'm fine" and hope someone notices. I'd rather suffer quietly than be seen as a burden. I get frustrated and demand it, or I lash out when people don't see what I need without being told. I throw myself into helping someone else instead. Giving feels safe, but receiving feels uncomfortable and undeserved.

5.

Someone you love asks for something and you don't have the energy to give it. How do you respond?

I say no fast, or I don't respond at all. Sometimes I cut contact rather than explain or negotiate. I say yes because I'm afraid they'll pull away or love me less if I refuse. I say yes, then feel tired and resentful inside. I tell myself, "It's fine," and never mention it. I say no bluntly, or I make them feel guilty or small so they stop asking. I say yes and go above and beyond because their problem feels like my responsibility. Saying no makes me feel guilty and selfish.

6.

Someone close to you keeps making poor choices and facing the consequences. What do you do?

I step back. Their chaos drains me, so I create distance or walk away to protect my peace. I hold on even tighter. Their pain becomes my pain, and I can't stand the thought of losing them, so I stay wrapped up in their life. I put up with it. I tell myself this is just what I have to cope with, and I stay while it wears me down. I lecture, blame, or give ultimatums. I get angry that they won't listen or change. I step in and rescue. I cover for them, fix the problem, or make excuses to shield them from the consequences.
